Eight shot lines, verified
Nothing here came from a forum post. Every coordinate was derived from elevation and land data, then checked against a primary source for surface ownership, protected-area clearance, terrain backstop, and how you actually drive to it. These are short-range lines, 300 to 1,000 m. The mile tier is a different problem and lives on its own page.

Antelope Road, Warner Valley.
Two constraints now: a front-wheel-drive van with about 5.5 inches of clearance, and a walk short and gentle enough for a bad knee and a pulled muscle. The second one turned out to matter more, and it reversed the ranking — the shortest walks are the worst walks. The 77 m approach averages 28 percent grade, the 140 m one hides a 94 percent step and drops 8 m before it climbs. Those are scrambles up a bank. Antelope Road is nominally the longest of the four at 196 m, and it is the only gentle one: 10.7 percent average, 15 m of net gain, 3 m of dip. It also happens to have the best backstop found all night.

Then take the Arizona Strip bench.
High clearance buys back the spot a low car cannot reach, 10 km further down the same road. No protected ground inside 22 km, no fire restrictions at all since the Arizona Strip lifted its on 8 September, and a backstop of 458 m at 2,600 m. It is also the only one of the eight with room for a genuine mile attempt.

The pick, and it is the pick because of the walk. 196 m at an average of 10.7 percent, gaining 15 m, with only 3 m of down-and-back-up in the middle. That is a gentle desert bench, not a scramble. The backstop happens to be the best of anything found tonight as well: +305 to +313 m of rise at about 1.5 km, and it holds that on all five bearings, so a wide miss is still caught. You park on the road, walk east, and shoot east with the road behind you.

Three kilometres north, on better road surface: graded gravel rather than dirt. The trade is the walk, which is 599 m climbing 58 m. Good ground and a solid +338 to +383 m backstop at 2.1 km, but it is the harder approach of the two. Worth knowing about if Antelope Road looks soft when you get there.

Closest to Ivins of anything that survived, at 23 km, with a huge +742 m backstop. The walk is only 140 m but it averages 26 percent and contains a step near 94 percent, and it drops 8 m before it climbs. That is a clamber with a rifle and a bag. Fine on a good day, wrong for tomorrow.

Same road as the second one, further down, and a proper hike: 963 m with 127 m of climb carrying gear. The ground is genuinely good, a tight bowl of about +297 m at 820 m on every bearing. Ruled out on the walk alone.

OpenStreetMap has no connected route here. The graded roads show on the aerial imagery, but the last two kilometres are unproven. Scout it, do not commit a morning to it.
Nearest to Ivins and a superb 40-degree backstop wall, but 6.9 km of grade-5 track. Serious 4WD only, allow 45+ min on the track alone.

None of the eight below is really a mile problem — they are 300 to 1,000 m
lines picked for a short walk and a hard backstop. The mile tier was worked separately, because
it fails on different things: the shot line has to clear protected ground out to 3.4 km, not
900 m, and that kills most of what looks fine on a map.
Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. The shooting ban is real and bows count under it, but the citation is Washington County Code § 7-2-11, not 5-1-1. Section 5-4-4 is fire restrictions, which is probably where the number came from.
Dixie National Forest. Stage 2 was not in force through 31 October. It was rescinded on 27 July, and the Forest’s alerts page now lists no fire restriction at all — only road and trail closures, Pine Valley among them.
The rules that actually apply
Utah 76-11-209, renumbered from 76-10-508 in May 2025. No discharge within 600 feet of a house, dwelling, any building, or a structure housing domestic animals without written permission. None from a vehicle. None from, upon, or across a highway. Class B misdemeanor.
Utah is still under Stage 1 across the BLM Color Country District, which covers every Utah spot on this page. Ordinary target shooting is fine. Exploding targets and tracer ammunition are not.
Arizona Strip standing BLM rules, regardless of fire stage: nothing within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite or occupied area, and never across a road, trail or wash. Exploding targets and tracers are prohibited in Arizona at all times.
Steel is legal, rock sparks. Neither order bans steel targets. Both agencies flag the spark risk on rock and dry grass, so set up on dirt.
Pack out everything, brass included, and whatever the last group left. Dispersed shooting on public land stays legal on exactly this and nothing else.
If the roads look worse than the map says
Southern Utah Shooting Sports Park, 1134 S. Shooting Sports Park Rd, Hurricane. Paved the whole way, county-run, no membership, around $12 for the day, roughly 200 yards maximum. Call (435) 817-0360 first — Monday hours disagreed across sources, one listing 8 AM to 1 PM for September.
Turn around if a wash looks soft. A low car buried in sand 35 km out, alone, on a 96°F afternoon is a genuinely bad day, and no spot on this page is worth it.
